On July 8–10, 1776, Brigadier General Andrew Lewis's Virginia batteries on Cricket Hill bombarded Lord Dunmore's fleet anchored off Gwynn's Island. Lewis's guns drove Dunmore — the last royal governor of Virginia — from the Chesapeake, ending British authority in the colony.
